eat street canteen

Eat Street – 食街, part film set part staff canteen (part ping pong arena!) takes the role of a soap opera slashy and puts it on repeat. The space draws on Hong Kong’s diverse street life to create multiple zones reflecting the city’s unique dining culture.

  • Size : 650 sqm

    Category : Commercial | Workplace

    Scope : Interior Design

    Location : Hong Kong

The client wished to create a dynamic space for their staff unlike that of a traditional canteen. Merging the pragmatic function with the company’s new media and film roots gave the project its focus. Divided into 7 zones, each with its own distinct character, the canteen doubles as a film production facility. An internal street bisects the space with each zone connected through the centre. These zones can be used separately as sets for in-house film shoots, or as one to feed the extensive workforce.

The experience starts with Jimmy’s Lounge, a light take on a hidden jazz club complete with grand piano for dinner time performances. Adjacent, Pomme Café evokes the relaxed atmosphere found in the back streets of Soho with draping greenery and a large communal bench for gathering. The Hong Kong café with booth setting and steel framed windows draws on all the elements of the classic diners that are synonymous with the city, all be it with slightly more generous proportions.

In the centre the Market Stall, Dai Pai Dong (outdoor hawker centre), and Ping Pong court act as one paying tribute to the outdoor dining spaces scattered throughout the city. Centrally located the Market Stall’s point of sale uses red lamp shades to act as its beacon. Surrounding the stall, the kitchen and servery define the edges. Prominently placed a succulent roast meat stall reinforces the connection to Hong Kong’s traditional cuisine. Opposite, the Ping Pong court complete with candy-coloured bleachers provides a lively atmosphere for lunch time tournaments. Here pink netting encloses the area keeping those pesky balls in check.

At the rear you will find the Yum Cha restaurant. Custom table graphics, lucky gold wall ornaments, and a sea of bird cages floating above, invoke a lively atmosphere in this traditional setting. Bold colours on the floor, walls, and furnishing are used to differentiate each zone with LED neon signage enhancing the playful aesthetic.

A refreshing take on a staff canteen Eat Street looks to keep you smiling throughout the workday. We trust the staff love this one as much as we do.
